Diamond Peak and Waldo Wilderness Areas

In 2021, the Central Cascade Wilderness Permits will go into effect in the Mt. Jefferson, Three Sisters, and Mt. Washington Wilderness areas. These permits limit daily entry to lessen recreation impacts. Because both Diamond Peak and Waldo Lake Wilderness will continue to have self-issue permits, traffic on these trails is expected to increase. While the economy of local communities may benefit from the increase in visitors, many Willamette National Forest trails in these wilderness areas are in dire need of maintenance. It is crucial that Cascade Volunteers augments efforts in these areas in anticipation of this increased visitor use.

Funding for this project supports Deferred Trail Maintenance in the Diamond Peak and Waldo Lake Wilderness areas. This project is a collaboration between Cascade Volunteers, the Willamette National Forest, and Friends of the Central Cascades Wilderness. In the Diamond Peak Wilderness, FCCW will refurbish trailhead kiosks, replace/refurbish trailhead signs, install new trail junction signs, and install 2 new wilderness boundary signs. CV volunteers will be tackling trails in the Diamond Peak Wilderness that require moderate tread and drainage work. Northwest Youth Corps crews and CV wilderness trail crews will also tackle basic tread work and some heavy drainage rehabilitation work in the Waldo Lake Wilderness.

Proposed Accomplishments: 120 miles of trails maintained, 35 new or refurbished trail signs, 7 kiosks refurbished
