Bachelor Mt, Bugaboo
#3420, #3423
7/5/2021. Reported by CV (JB). Scouted trail for downed trees from TH to summit. From top down: Tree down at junction of Bachelor trail and Bugaboo/Bruno trail, aprox 1 foot in diameter. Maybe <100 ft towards Bachelor TH, downed tree across trail about 1 foot in diameter, then shortly after another tree about the same size across trail.
First section of trail from TH (or last if returning to car) after last viewpoint, several downed trees. 2 trees about 1 foot in diameter, before switchback another tree about 10", then after switchback (or first section before switchback from TH), several bigger trees down...aprox 3 maybe 1.5-2 feet in diameter, 2 aprox 10" in diameter.
Tread on trail is still great, brushing holding strong! 🙂
Beachie Trail #33417/29/20 reported by Salamanders (BD). Scouted from Beachie Saddle to junction of Beachie Trail with French Creek Ridge Trail 3349. Heavy brush noted especially in first 1.5 miles from the saddle. There is an extensive wet and muddy area (over 100 ft) near the creek at 1.0 miles from saddle, with trail hard to find. Two logs were cut, minor brushing done.
FS 4697 to Beachie Saddle-
Heavy brushing of old road bed that serves as a trail, leading from Elk Lake Campground to Beachie Saddle. Created 8-10 foot corridor through overgrown alder, vine maple, etc.
Deep trench has formed on south side of old road bed. Needs check dams and drains, but very difficult to work by hand due to rocky ground and exposed bedrock.
Bingham Ridge Trail #34218/3/22Detroit Ranger District. Reported by Salamanders(B). Bingham Ridge 3421: Logged out; minor brushing (saplings) could still be done
LOW 3493 from Bingham to Hunts Creek: Logged out; could use more sapling brushing. The Detroit RD map shows the LOW junction with Bingham about ½ mile south of where it actually is located.
Blue Lake Trail #34229/16/21 Reported by Salamanders (BD):
logged out from Duffy Lake to about the mid-point of Mowich Lake.
Work Remaining
Still need to logout from this point to the saddle above Blue Lake, and down the other side to about Melis Lake, Brush is moderate in open burn areas.
(Detroit) 8/21/2021 Salamanders (BD). Logged out from about Jenny Lake to Melis Lake on Blue Lake Trail
Work Remaining
We continued on Blue Lake trail from Marion Lake and got past Melis Lake, to where the trail gets steep. From there to the top of the saddle just north of Blue Lake there are only about a dozen logs left, but the last mile from the saddle, past Blue Lake to the junction with Bowerman there are still about 90 logs left. Nothing big or complex.
Boomer Trail
Silver Falls St. Park
11/17/20,12/1/20 Reported by Salamanders (BD).Silver Falls state park: Corridor clearing for new trail construction. Middle mile of new trail is now brushed and logged. Lower third needs to be done.
Bowerman Trail #349210/8/2021 (same group),Competed logout of Bowerman Trail
Work Remaining
In first mile from junction with Minto Pass Trail: About a dozen knee-high step-over logs could still be cut out; all the higher ones are done. Additional brushing width should be done through through several thickets of saplings. In the last 2 miles up to Jorn lake intermittent brushing is needed for encroaching saplings, ceonothus, etc, but the route is obvious.
10/1/2021, Reported by Salamanders (BD), Brushing was completed on first mile of Bowerman trail after the Minto Pass junction. Logout hooked into the point about 1.2 miles from the junction, where the work in August ended. The worst logs were removed in the first mile from the Minto junction, including all of those which required crawling underneath.
Work Remaining
There are still about 40 logs remaining in this mile, about half of which are step-overs less than knee-high and the rest are larger, including one close to 36". The brushed corridor could be widened in several areas where there are dog-hair thickets of conifer saplings. Tread is generally adequate for a Wilderness trail.

8/23/2021, Reported by Salamanders (BD). We logged from Jorn Lake for a little over 2 miles on Bowerman.
Work Remaining
The last 1.2 miles to the Minto junction has over 100 logs left, with a number over 30”. The brush for the last 0.8 miles to the Minto junction is so bad it is hard to find the trail in multiple places.
Bruno Meadows #34248/31/2021, Reported by Salamanders (PH). Logout and brush from Bruno Meadows TH to junction with Bugaboo Trail
Work Remaining
trail 3420 to top of Bachelor Mtn has not been scouted or cleared this year.
Bugaboo Ridge Trail #34237/19/2022Detroit.
Logout from Bugaboo TH to junction with Bachelor Mtn trail, with spot brushing
Work Remaining
Bugaboo and Bachelor need further brushing, and tread work.
Chimney Peak #33829/5/2022 (BD). There are two no-go logs left between Fitt Creek and the McQuade saddle, both over 36" with attached rootballs uphill. Rigging or blasting would be necessary to clear these. Current option for hikers is to crawl under, climb over, or detour downhill. There is no reasonable option for equestrians. The majority of the tread is narrow (less than 12 inches), severely slipped or completely absent. Brushing is adequate but could be further improved in many areas. The trail from the saddle to the top of Chimney Peak has one no-go log (steep sidehill, attached root ball with imbedded rocks above trail); and narrow and slipped tread but good control of brush. about a mile east of the Swamp Peak junction on Chimney Peak trail there is another no-go rootball attached log that has an uphill bypass, and also a 14" loose segment log, strongly endbound, that has been a no-go.
7/24/2022.Reported by BD.
Chimney Peak Trail: Two logs left near river crossing, largest 24". Teh short section from the crossing to the junction with south Pyramid Trail has not been scouted or cleared to my knowledge.
2041: Well brushed and logged. No further needs this season.
6/19/2022, reported by BD.
Brushing was completed from the junction of Chimney Peak trail 3382 with Gordan Peak Trail 3387 to a point 0.5 miles from FR 2041 and junction with the bike bypass. The sign at the Wilderness boundary near 2041 designating user groups is down and needs a new post. Good brushing was done from Swamp Creek to Fitt Creek. Spot brushing was done on Chimney Peak trail from Fitt Creek crossing to the McQuade saddle.
FR 11 is open from Hwy 22 to Hwy 20. The road to Swamp Peak TH is blocked by snow one mile from Gordan Peak TH.
Work Remaining
From junction of FR 2041/bike bypass headed NW into the Wilderness on Chimney Peak Trail: There are 8 logs left to cut; the last one is 24". About half of this section has been well brushed.
The section of Gordan Peak Trail from the Bike Bypass to junction with Chimney Peak Trail is clear of logs and brush.
Chimney Peak Trail from Swamp Creek crossing to Donaca Lake has two logs; brush has been cleared.
Chimney Peak trail from Donaca Lake to junction with Swamp Peak Trail: Brush is mostly clear. Some tread work is needed around root ball craters. There are three logs, all fairly simple and close together less than a mile from Donaca Lake.
Between Swamp Peak junction and Fitt Creek there is minimal brush and no logs.
Between Fitt Creek and McQuade Saddle (2.2 miles): Intermittent severe brush, tread slip and trail hard to see through old washout area. A total of 17 logs, plus two which are no-go due to risk. About half are larger than 30" and several potential C complexity. This is the section that most requires concentrated work; there is good camping at Fitt Creek.
Swamp Peak Trail has not yet been scouted.
10/29/21. reported by Salamanders (KS). First day: Advance team (Gary, Jennie, Karol) focused on logout, with 4-5 large (>24” logs) to cut out segments and logout of smaller logs (<12”) from trailhead to first bridge over the Middle Santiam River. Some brushing was done by first team. Second team (Beth, Ben, Phil, Tom) started from trailhead and used small chainsaw to cut out saplings to make 8’ wide corridor, loppers and handsaws to cut brush and overhanging branches. Both teams made it to first bridge (app. 1.2 miles) by end of first day.
Second day: Advance team (Beth, Ben, Trevor, Indigo, Cathleen) headed down the trail app. 1.7 miles to the stranded bridge over Pyramid Creek to cross over for logout and brushing of the far side (roughly 1.3 miles remaining, total). Trailhead team (Karol, Gary, Tom, Jennie, and Deanna) hiked to the Pyramid Creek bridge and assisted with the water crossing.

The trailhead team then logged and brushed from Pyramid Creek bridge back to Middle Santiam River bridge, creating an 8’ wide corridor. Additional brushing was done from Middle Santiam River bridge to the area near the dispersed camping along river. In one 10’ section of this low area, the tread was widened and steps cut where a section was washing out and trail was being undercut. An additional 15’ of treadwork was done at the second creek crossing to allow better access down to the creek where a natural crossing existed and then up from the creek on the other side.

While the trailhead team worked back towards the trailhead, the advance team pushed on from the Pyramid Creek bridge to the junction with Chimney Peak trail. Turning around at this point, they were able to log and brush approximately 0.8 miles of the trail, leaving approximately 0.5 miles yet to complete just on the other side of Pyramid Creek.

Work Remaining
A crew is returning on 11/7 to finish the logout/brushing of the remaining 0.5 mile segment on the north side of Pyramid Creek. No additional brushing or treadwork is planned at this time.
9/5/21. Reported by Salamanders (BD). Completed logout from Donaca Lake to junction with Swamp Peak Trail. Brushing to good standard from Swamp Creek to Egg Creek; brushing to lesser standard from Egg Creek to junction with Swamp Peak trail.
Work Remaining
4 logs remain between Donaca Lake and junction with Swamp Peak Trail: 20" elevated, strong top bind near Donaca Lake, first cut and part of second cut made by Brandon and crew in July but not completed due to evacuation for fire in area; old growth 36" log 200 feet east of Swamp Peak junction; 14" severe end bind with loose root wad, about 1/4 mile east of Swamp Peak junction; and one more simple log 1/2 mile east of junction (ran out of time).
More brushing needed between Swamp Peak Junction and Egg Creek. Several root ball craters need to be filled in or bypass improved. One double root wad has pulled out a section of trail and has a go-around uphill; no-go for cutting.
7/12/2021. Reported by Salamanders (BD).
Intensive brushing and logout from the west Wilderness boundary to the top of chimney peak. This also included brushing from the McQuade Shelter to the saddle. The trail to the top of the peak is now fully cleared.
Work Remaining
Tread is narrow and/or slipped in many places. Re-benching is needed from the saddle to the base of the rock tower on chimney Peak, and about the upper 2 miles of McQuade Creek Trail.

6/24/21.
Scouting from McQuade saddle to Fitt Creek on Chimney Peak trail (2.2 miles). There are a total of 16 logs down, 7 of which are between the saddle and the first creek (less than a mile). Three logs were determined last yer to be no-go for cross cut due to extreme endbind with attached root ball; large root ball just above trail, and 40” cracked and split log. Brush is intermittently severe, with Rhodies, salal and tall huckleberry overlapping the trail. Tread is narrow or slipped for much of the distance.
Work Remaining
The most pressing need is brushing, and removal of several very large (>36”) logs which are difficult to pass.

5/30/21. Reported by CV (NF). Chimney Peak , including "green road": clear of downed logs. Minor tread issues where it's narrow.

5/4/2021.Reported by Salamanders (KS). This trail is actually the continuation of FR 2041 which was blocked by a landslide 15 or 20 years ago, and has gradually turned into single track.
The day was spent with two saw teams running chainsaws pretty much non-stop, carving out a corridor through encroaching vine maple, alder and fir saplings, including vastly improving the last few hundred feet of access to the trailhead. Two logs were logged out.

Crescent Mountain.5/29/2021. Reported by CV (NF). S. Crescent logged out for the first 2 miles. N. Crescent: clear up to the last ridgeline before the final climb. Snow is laying in heavy above that point. Could use a brushing between 548 road crossing and top.
Dixie Lake Trails8/22/2021 Reported by Salamanders (BD).Dixie Lake Trail 3494, From junction with Santiam Lake Trail 3491 to junction with Blue Lake Trail 3422, 1.5 miles:
Total of 90-100 logs, max size 30”, with most in 10-24” range.
Three jackstraws piles: First with about 20 trees, many in the 18-24” range (flagging was placed to help find the route through). Second is 16 trees, third is about 13 trees with size up to 30”. Many uprooted trees, appears that intense wind hit this area.
Blue Lake Trail 3422 from junction with Santiam Lake Trail 3491 to junction with Dixie Lake Trail 3494, 1.5 miles:

8/16/2021 (JP, Trail host). I told people that West Cascade BCH was clearing trail and that they were on horses and mules and to make sure that their dog was leashed or under control when they passed or was near them. Lots of positive comments about the trail clearing by BCH (excerpt).
Elk Horn 334712/17/19 Reported by Salamanders. From west TH for 1.7 miles, brushing and log out is complete. Scouting was carried out from end of work to a point 2.4 miles from TH ( not all the way to seasonal ponds)

NO signs are present at the trailhead off FR 201. Logging is complete to 1.7 miles except one that was missed. Between 1.7 and 2.4 miles there are 10 logs down; right at 2.4 miles is 38" elevated log, 2 feet off tread (possible to climb under). Not scouted from this point to Phantom Natural Bridge. Brushing is complete to 1.7miles; east of this after the trail crosses to the east side of the ridge there is very dense brush including rhodie and alder. Tread for entire length seen is narrow (12 inches) and severely outsloped. At 2.0 miles from west TH the tread is non-existent with overgrown brush, sliding rocks and difficult footing on steep side hill. Flagging had been placed at some previous time to mark route.
French Creek Ridge #33498/4/20. Reported by Salamanders (BD). From east TH of 3349 to junction with 3341: Logout and heavy brushing. Also logout between lower TH on FR458 and upper TH on FR461.

Need moderate brushing between the two lower trailheads, but definitely passable. FR 461 has a significant washout and erosion occurring on the last corner and may soon be impassable to all but very high clearance vehicles. Trailhead sign is missing at lower TH on 458.

Work Remaining
Tread is narrow and slipped at upper2 miles.
heavy brushing for one mile from wilderness boundary. Several logs cut out outside wilderness; one is 24 inches with double trunk, about one mile from Jawbone Flats. Notches cut to facilitate crossing but tree left in place due to complexity. Kopetski: Brushing from Jawbone Flats to Cedar Flats; removed debris from deconstructed bridges near Sawmill Falls end.
Gordon Peak7/12/2021. Reported by CV (BD). Log out of last 0.5 miles of Gorday Peak trail, from bike bypass to junction with Chimney Peak Trail. Log out of Chimney Peak trail from that junction to Swamp Creek crossing. Following this the entire crew had to self-evacuate due to nearby wild fire activity.
Work Remaining
Chimney Peak Trail has substantial blowdown from Donaca Lake to the junction with Swamp Peak trail.
Gordon Lakes 33866/17/21 Reported by Salamanders (RK). Gordon Lakes Trail is clear of logs, with the exception of one 22" rotten one about 2 miles in from the eastern trailhead. The end of that log just crosses the trail, so is very easy to get around by going a couple of feet to the side.
Gordon Meadows 33943/11/2022.Reported by Salamanders (BD).
Gordon Lakes Trail scouted from Gordon Lakes West TH to junction with Gordon Meadows Trail. Snow starts at about the 3500 foot level, and at the junction there is 2-3 feet of compacted snow with 4-6 inches loose snow on top. Only 4 small logs were seen on htis section but more could be hidden under snow. There are a very few small trees bent over the trail and held in place by the snow. The old sign at the junction is broken and difficutl to read and does not have the wording that is now the standard (trail name and number only). This should be replaced with a sign that says:
Grizzly Peak #34289/21/20211 Reported by Salamander (KS). 3428:

Hunts Creek Trail/Cove #34408/23/22: PCT in this section needs more brushing at the north end. Hunts Creek trail is very brushy (hard to see tread) in steep section from junction with Hunts Cove trail to where the trail levels out close to Pamelia Lake. One 38" root-ball attached log was left in place about 1/4 mile downhill from Hunts Creek/Hunts Cove junction. Hikers can duck under, and equestrians can circle above the root ball crater off trail. There is one grouping of 8 logs below knee height on the section of Hunts Cove trail just east of Hanks Lake. The trail to Hunts Lake was not cleared but scouts report about 20 logs, up to 30" diameter.
8/3/22 Detroit Ranger District   Reported by: Salamanders (BD). Hunts Creek 3440 from LOW to PCT: Logged and brushed. The sign at the junction of Hunts Creek and Hunts Cove is missing although the post is still there. It’s a bit confusing because this junction is just a few hundred yards west of the junction with the PCT.
PCT from Hunts Creek to Shallow lake trail: Logged and brushed to standard. One small blocked culvert was removed and replaced with a rock drain. The 6’ by 8” metal culvert was carried out and left by the Bingham Ridge TH kiosk.
We took a hike to Shale Lake and there were 16 logs from Hunts Creek Trail to there, not too bad for hikers but impassable to stock. I found out when I got home that the PCT steward who normally handles the Hunts Creek to Hunts Creek section is not active this year due to an injury. The Salamander Crew will start on this section heading south from Pamelia Lake this weekend.
