Charlton Lake Trail #197/17/2016 snow: Crescent Ranger District Reported by: Ed Willson
Trail Work is complete.
Chush Falls Trail 40805/8/19 snow: 5200' Bend Ranger District Reported by: STA
The small "lake" is full and required skirting but there was almost no snow
on the trail as far as the main falls - just a few patches up that last incline
Clearing Needed:
Non-Wilderness Section: roughly 23 trees 12-inch or smaller, 2 trees 18" -
20" , 1 tree roughly 26" to 28". A bit of limbing and cleanup. The big one
is not far from the parking area, just after the trail drops down toward the
river. It's not a bad slide-over and may be from last season. It will call for
a longer chainsaw bar but is the only one, so I would recommend not
lugging a big heavy chainsaw all the way to the wilderness boundary. An
18"-20" bar on a smaller saw should suffice for all but that one big tree.
The 26 trees are sprinkled along the length of the non-wilderness section
with the last one (about 18") being just five feet before the wilderness sign.
Another issue on the non-wilderness part is the alarmingly rapid
encroachment of Ceanothus and some Manzanita. It would be best to
include a brushing team in your crew - equipped with loppers.
Wilderness Section: 9 or 10 trees 12"-14" or smaller, 1 tree about 16"-18".
Last two trees on the wilderness section are just at the start of the last
incline (marked with flagging tape) and just after you crest that last hill (I
think?)? Some small limbing and trimming needed on both sections - I
cleaned up some on the way back down.
Trail in amazingly good shape considering the amount of snow we had and
some late fall wind. Unfortunately, there are a lot of "leaners" caught up in
other dead trees, over and/or near the trail, tricky to handle but eventually
will come down. There is still a ton of trees to come down!

Deschutes River Trail3/30/22. Reported by SWATS (DA).
Working with 1 DogPAC and 5 FCCW volunteers, we installed 6 reassurance posts with trail identification plates and 9 trailhead and trail junction posts with conventional trailhead and junction signs. In addition, we moved a small kiosk from its position near the Cascade Lakes Highway to the junction of the Rimrock Paved and Deschutes River Trails. Six old reassurance posts were removed. One badly rotted reassurance post, on the Entrada Loop, was reset in the ground. That post and trail plate will be replaced in the near future.
Work Remaining
15 more reassurance posts and plates and 8 trail junction signs have to be set at trail and trail / road junctions. Carsonite road number signs are also to be set at trail / road crossings.
The trail is pretty rutted from bikes before the freeze. There is a ditch in the middle of the trail going down to the Benham East area. A number of roots need to be removed from tread.

Scouted- no report.
High School South Trail2/25/20. Reported by STA. After a recent survey of the trail, I found some serious drainage and erosion issues with this popular trail. So, I spent this outing going back out and studied each area where the erosion is severe and came up with a plan of action. In three of the worst areas, I realized that we would have to make small modifications to the original trail design by doing short reroute sections in order to build both rolling grade dips plus grade reversals. The three bad spots are located where the trail follows the fall line of hills that are 8 to 19 degrees slope. Cleaning existing rolling grade dips in other areas should also be performed. All areas were flagged and I will follow up next by taking volunteers out with me to take care of the issues. It should be noted that all the major issues are located on both sides of the hill that the trail traverses.

Jimerson Equestrian Trail3/12/20 snow: Sisters Ranger District Reported by: STA
want to thank John Soules, the new SRD Law Enforcement Officer for meeting out there to check on this issue! It was great meeting him! What we discovered were two separate issues having to do with the Jimerson Trail! 1) Some group has indeed built a technical mountain bike flow/jump trail coming down the hill and crossing over the Jimerson Trail just east of road 15. They have built about mile long run so far it appears they aren?t done yet. This is not only an impact/safety issue for the Jimerson trail, but certainly a resource damage issue for the FS. This is really recent activity by the looks of the excavations to build the jumps and turns. Lots of earth moved. John and I also noticed trees that had been cut down and used to help build and secure the jumps. 2) The second issue concerns the use of motorcycles on the Jimerson and is unrelated to the flow/jump trail above. I hiked the Jimerson from the Crossroads entrance road up to where it meets the short dead end 1505170 Rd at the top of the hill. Motorcycles have run the full length of this section of trail. I noticed that both motorcycles and quads have been using the Jimerson, which is was created on an old decommissioned road as it passes to the north of Crossroads. They have even run over the carsonite ?No Vehicles? stake placed by the FS on the east side of the Crossroads entrance road and the stake is barely standing by a few strands! I?m not sure what you all want to do to address this issue.
Lake Creek Trail #4896Reported 2/11/2020 STA.
I needed to hike this section of trail in order to verify the section of it that is open to horses so our STA 2020 map is correct. The trail was in pretty good shape. There was only one small fir tree that the snow had bent over low to the trail. A large ranger saw should handle that just fine. This trail will need a lot of brushing come this spring, especially where it passes through the Land Trust property. I did not observe any other issues.

Merle Lake #128/14/2016 snow: Bend Ranger District Reported by: SWATS

Metolius River Trail4/14&21/2021: Bend Ranger District Reported by: SWATS (KD). East and west trails are clear.
This section of the trail is in pretty good condition with just needing some minor brushing
On the west side, it ends at Lower Canyon Creek CG. On the east
side, it continues upstream passing through Camp Sherman and
continuing on. The sections of trail through the canyon upstream of
the hatchery needs pretty much constant brushing during the
growing season. The trail is close to the river on both sides, so, there
is plenty of moisture for plant growth. Proximity to the river presents
another problem. Fisherman and hikers love to get to the water, so,
they frequently slide off the trail and make user trails down to the
water. In most places the hillside the trail is built on is very steep, so,
folks literally slide down the slope, which causes significant damage
to edge of the trail. I would recommend getting a work party
organized to repair these areas. In a few spots along the trail, large
rocks have been placed to reinforce the trail edge. Those spots are
holding up very well. The rest of the damaged areas should receive
the same treatment. his popular stretch of the Metolius River Trail is right on the water and, so, the plants grow very quickly and it needs frequent bushing. I did a thorough job of getting the brush off which took some time. I worked about four hours each of the four days quitting when the afternoon temps climbed! This trail is long and there are other sections that need brushing as well.
11/3/19 STA: 3 mile survey and 1 18" step over log very near the Fish Hatchery. Surveyed from Lower Canyon Creek CG and Fish Hatchery
Metolius-Windigo Trail #998/9/2021.Reported by SWATS (DA). Four signs were placed on the Metolius-Windigo trail. Two were placed at the ford on Whitefish Creek and two at the junction with the Summit Lake trail.
Work Remaining
Signs are needed at the junction of the Metolius-Windigo trail and an unnamed trail that connects with Forest Road 60, 1/4 mile East of the entrance to the Spring Campground. This trail is heavily used by mountain bike riders.
7/31/2021. reported by SWATS (DA).Trailhead signs and posts were installed at Irish & Taylor, Many Lakes and Lemish Lake trailheads. PCT user management plaques were installed at Irish &Taylor trailhead. One log was cut out of the PCT at the trailhead. A "Share the Trail" sign was installed at Many Lakes trailhead. The Three Sisters Wilderness entrance sign and post were relocated to the opposite side of the trail at the Many Lakes trailhead.
Trail junction signs were installed at the turn in the PCT at Irish & Taylor trailhead and the Junction of the Metolius-Windigo with Charlton trail.
Work Remaining

We also scouted the signs at Lucky Lake trailhead and the junction of Metolius-Windigo and Senoj Lake next to Lucky Lake.
Work Remaining
Replace the signs at Lucky Lake trailhead to identify the trail as the Metolius-Windigo. Replace signs at the trail junction to identify the trail as the Metolius-Windigo. The Senoj Lake trail will be shown to begin at the trail junction.

Millican Crater Trail #40666/24/21 Sisters Ranger District Reported by: SWATS (KD)

log out complete. Note: a horse person wielding a (presumably) electric chain saw had kind of cleared the trail. Most of the smaller logs had been cut, but not placed to enhance the trail. The trail was cut 36-48 wide. If there were snarls or an easier go around the trail was cut that way. There are many spring poles that were cut 3-4' off the ground, rather than near the base.
Work Remaining
Young lodge pole are sprouting along the trail, need brushing. The middle half mile of trail (down hill, east) from the highest point is severely trenched.

Paulina Lakeshore Trail #3955:6/2/19 Reported by HCFV
Trail #55 Paulina Lakeshore Loop Trail requires considerable Tread
work due to erosion. The damage is confined to the area from
Paulina Lodge area clockwise to/near the "step tree" that crosses the
trail an estimated 2 miles from the Lodge. I would recommend that
some of the trail should be relocated inland to avoid the downslope
area near the water which will continue to erode at a fast rate.. The
inland relocation will likely require a sawyer to accompany the trail
maintenance crew.

Paulina Peak #39576/21/19 Reported by HCFV
Paulina Peak Trail #51 at the lower level is well defined but at the
upper end (approximately 3/4 mile from the top) the trail is not well
marked nor is it well defined. Due to the snow loading and late
season melting, hikers take the path of least resistance which
deviates from the actual intended trail. In shaded areas snow melt is
quite late in the season. Some consideration should be given to
rerouting the upper trail towards the open/early melt area complete
with adequate visible trail markings. Jessie Larson and Carol Scafe
are aware of the issue and we will discuss possible rerouting/signing
before Fall approaches this year.

Tumalo Trail #387/5/2022. Reported by KD.
Seven of us spent today on Tumalo Mountain, working in three groups: Jim recertified Christie on the chainsaw using the two large logs one-quarter mile from the trailhead, plus one more up the trail. Bob and Kelly were the only ones who made it to the summit, while removing five more logs from across the trail. Dave, John, and I rebuilt approximately twenty water bars that needed the most attention. We three went about two-thirds the way to the top before calling it a day due to time.
Work Remaining
There is plenty more tread and drainage work to do in the Fall. More importantly, the two logs that Christie cut into four ten-foot lengths remain in place because there still is a lot of snow around them, making movement impossible right now. And there is one more log farther up the trail that should be moved once the snow melts. That means a crew needs to go part way up the trail again in a few weeks when those logs can be rolled out of the way. I would think that four men could accomplish that in a couple of hours, using brute strength and straps. They are all around 18 inches in diameter and very heavy. I will schedule that in a few weeks. I am not sure what response I will get to just do that, so maybe it can be part of another chore in the same general area?

10/4/2021. Reported by SWATS (KD).Started rebuilding T&D. completed first .3 m.
